Jen's Vacation Adventures
So, back from vacation. Well, I've been back since Saturday, but just haven't done much on the internets besides marathon lurking.

Pie in her usual trip state.

The trip down went as well as one could expect a 13-hour overnight drive to go. I had bottles and toys and SpongeBob DVDs all ready, prepared for anything a traveling Pie could throw at me...

...except for carsickness. Wasn't prepared for that.

So we arrived in NC tired, rumpled, and with a carseat reeking of baby vomit. Things could only go up from there!

Sunrise over NC, as seen through Pie's shade.

Our house, which was lovely - more than enough space for all of us. My biggest gripe was that our room, and the kitchen and common area, were all on the top floor, which meant we had to constantly shadow Pie lest she fall down the stairs. But we had a nice view of the ocean:

...and my in-laws had stocked an obscene amount of food, so creature comforts were not lacking.

Also, private pool.

Yeah, that's right.

Pie loved the water, both pool and ocean - in fact, the first time we took her to the beach, we were in street clothes, not intending to do more than wade at the edge of the waves.

Silly us.

Pie saw the waves and was off like a shot, and Joe had to constantly hold onto the straps of her overalls so she wouldn't faceplant into the Atlantic.

Of course, she got utterly soaked and thought it was the most hilarious thing on earth.

The Outer Banks are really, really remote. As in, driving down NC-12 meant 20-30 minutes of the above scenery, punctuated with occasional towns full of beach houses, seafood restaurants, and souvenir shops.

Pie, off on a day trip to Hatteras Village.

The vacation was about as peaceful as it could be with four toddlers around:

Not to mention the two infants not shown. Plus, Pie had a weeklong case of Mommy Clings, which meant I had a two-foot-tall shadow during all her waking hours.

Our days mostly consisted of lazing around, be it indoors, in the pool, or at the beach, with some fantastic family dinners at night. In fact, we went out twice, and I can say with confidence that the homecooked meals were way tastier.

Also, nothing I had in NC could compare to the epic glory that is the fried shrimp of O'Steen's in St. Augustine, Florida. Sorry, Outer Banks!

On our last night, we had an extra treat - since Joe and I never had a wedding celebration, his family decided to hold one, complete with...

Dalek Cakes! Yes, they're a little bride and groom. :D

So, all in all, good times were had.

More pictures:

Yeah, that's right - our house had an elevator.

The surrounding neighborhood of beach houses.

Pie learned the ways of the juicebox.

Lighthouse!

Ocean!

Pie licking up the frosting during wedding cake construction!

Pie making a mess of some watermelon. She ended up dripping it all over the dog...

Fajita night means OM NOM NOM TORTILLA!

...Yeah, I spent the week ignoring the scenery and taking pictures of Pie!

Tune in next time for Jen's Summer Reading and Thoughts Thereon!
